Guy Bassett, 16, Meets Death Friday Afternoon
The family circle of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bassett of Alpha was sadly broken Friday when their 16 year old son, Guy Bassett, accidentally shot himself, sustaining injuries from which he died at few hours afterwards at the Nugent hospital, where he was rushed as soon as possible. The accident happened early in the afternoon about a mile from the Bassett home. Guy and a friend, Harold Chapman, had gone after wild blackberries, the former taking with him a .22 rifle. Due to the trail having become overgrown and hard to find Guy climbed onto a stump to see if he could locate it. When he undertook to stand the gun on the edge of the stump on which he was standing the weapon slipped from his hand and slid down the side of the stump, discharging as it fell. The bullet struck Guy in the forehead just above the bridge of the nose, ranged backward and lodged in the back of his head. He fell mortally wounded. His companion secured help as quickly as possible, Guy never regained consciousness and died late Friday afternoon.
In addition to the bereaved parents, Guy is survived by two brothers, Ernest and Lewis Bassett; and a sister, Miss Nina Bassett, all of Alpha. The family have the sympathy of their large circle of friends in their bereavement.
Funeral services were held at the Sticklin Mortuary Sunday afternoon. Reverend Phillip H. Raymond of the Centralia Methodist church officiated. Burial was at Fernhill cemetery.
