Hugh D. Bassett

Hugh D. Bassett, age 75 of Kimball Twp., passed away on October 14, 2023, surrounded by his family.
He was born on June 24, 1948, in Detroit to the late Patrick and Victoria Bassett. He married Lota Pahy on November 15, 1974 in Mt. Clemens.
Hugh was born in Detroit and grew up in Redford Township, he graduated in from Redford High School in 1966 and immediately joined the Coast Guard where he served helping set up Selfridge Air Force Base and working search and rescue on the great lakes. After leaving the Coast Guard in 1970 Hugh went to work in the dental field as a ceramist sculpting porcelain teeth for caps crowns and bridges. He was a master at his craft and Hugh's talents were well known and thought of throughout the industry. Hugh eventually moved to Smiths Creek, Michigan with his wife and kids to a 40 acre farm which saw horses and rescue animals of all kinds over the years. Hugh also became a Unitarian Pastor who officiated many weddings including friends and family. Hugh loved his work, he loved his family and friends, almost as much as he loved watching M*A *S*H (I mean, he really loved M*A *S*H!) He had a great laugh and a great sense of humor. It may sound like a cliché but with Hugh?s it was always true - that to know him was indeed to love him, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Lota Bassett, children; Thomas (Emmie Gamboa), Sean Donnelly, Brett Donnelly, Tammy (Tim) Meyer and Amber (David Basnaw) Bassett, grandchildren; Annabella Donnelly, Melody Meyer, Emily Meyer, Faith (Canyon) Baker, Brendan Donnelly and Kyle Donnelly, great granddaughter, Lila Baker, and brothers; James (Mary) Bassett and Richard Bassett.
Hugh was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Bassett, sister and bother-in-law, Susan and Lorenz Dannhausen.
Funeral services will be held on Friday - October 20, 2023 at 1:00pm in the Jowett Funeral Home - 1634 Lapeer Ave., Port Huron. Reverend Kendra Warsalla-Sagash will officiate. Visiting will be Thursday - October 19, 2023 from 3:00pm until 7:00pm in the funeral home and again on Friday, from 11:00am until time of service at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers - memorials contributions can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
