James Bassett, aged 18 years, height 5 feet 5 1/2 inches, complexion light; eyes blue; hair light; born Clakr Co. IN; occupation laborer, enslisted October 26, 1861 at Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, IN by Capt. Nafin, for a 3 year term of duty. James was mustered into Capt. Nafin's Co., 49 Reg't IN, Infantry on 21 Nov 1861 in Jeffersonville, IN as a private. On 6 Dec 1862 James was detached to Lamphere's Battery where he stayed until his death and burial on the battlefield at the engagement of Thompson's Hill near Fort Gibson, MS on 1 May 1863.
