    Notes
    • From the Memoir of Sarah J. Bassett, 1848, published in Philadelphia, we have
      the following:
Her mother, Sarah Jarmy, was of respectable family in Ipswich,
England, and her father, George Francis Bassett, was a silversmith of
Yorkshire. Arrived in Philadelphia, young and inexperienced, and not being
furnished with suitable letters, they found themselves strangers indeed in a
strange land, and having expended their little means they were soon reduced to
a state of great destitution. A few benevolent individuals who had beco
acquainted with their situation, relieved their immediate necessities, and
before long succeeded in procuring employment for the husband......In the year
of 1798, the awful scourge of the yellow fever broke out in Philadelphia, and
spread fearfulness and desolation through all ranks of society. Among many
others, both G.F. Bassett and his wife, fell victims to this disease.
