Celia Bassett Lerner died in Hamden on March 13, 2014. Born in New Haven in November 1917, she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Rebecca Bassett. Cherished wife of the late Arnold Lerner; mother of Robin (Ranice) Lerner Caron of Hamden and Ivy (Sid) Lerner-Frank of New Delhi, India. Celia was the proud grandmother of Joshua Frank of Beijing, China and Simon Frank of New York City. She was predeceased by her brother, Bernard Benjamin Bassett; her sister, Frieda Bassett Goldberg; and her son-in-law, Laurent Caron. Celia worked for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad after graduation from Commercial High School in New Haven, years which she spoke of fondly and often. These are formative and key to her identity as a young working woman. She was employed in several departmental libraries at Yale University until her retirement, always wanting to be in an environment of knowledge and culture. Following her retirement, Celia worked at ALSO-Cornerstone for 15 years, underscoring the importance she placed on social issues. Celia was an active member of Junior Hadassah, a charter member of Hamden ORT, a member of the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven, a member of the Jewish Home for the Aged Auxiliary and a past president of Friends of the Hamden Library. She and Arnold were active members of the B’nai Jacob Synagogue in Woodbridge for many years. Friends described her as “the consummate volunteer", from the Shubert Theater to Whitney Center, where she lived for the past 14 years. Family and her many friends knew her to be a lively music-lover, generous to many causes, friends and strangers. In the spirit of tzedakah, please remember Celia with contributions to the charity of one’s choice. May her memory be a blessing. Funeral services at the Adas Israel section of Beaverdale Memorial Park, Fitch Street corner of Pine Rock Avenue, New Haven, Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock. A memorial service will be held at Whitney Center at a later date. Funeral arrangements in care of Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, New Haven.
