Worth Stocker
Gettysburg - Worth Stocker, 91, of Gettysburg passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007, at the Gettysburg Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg with Pastor Susan O'Connell presiding. Burial will be in the Gettysburg Cemetery, directed by Luce Funeral Home, Gettysburg. Visitations will be Sunday from 1-7 p.m. at the funeral home with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Worth was born Oct. 21, 1915, in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, to G.L. and Carrie (Glosser) Stocker. The family moved to Gettysburg, where Worth and his nine siblings attended school. He graduated from Gettysburg High School. On August 2, 1936, he married Violet Bassett, his childhood sweetheart. They raised two daughters, Shari and Kayleen. Worth resided in Gettysburg all his life. He first worked as a mechanic and later became part owner of Quiett Motors. He also spent many hours working with his father in the Blacksmith Shop, which he and Vi recently donated to the Dakota Sunset Museum. During the 1950s, Violet and Worth bought the Palace Theater and two years later built the Rainbow Drive-In Theater, bringing a new form of entertainment to the community. Around this time, Worth also became involved in farming, an occupation he enjoyed until his retirement at age 90. Worth was a man of great integrity, strength and compassion. He loved the outdoors and spent many pleasant hours hunting and fishing. He was a quiet and humble person who found great joy in helping others. He loved children and earned the nickname "Grandpa Bean" because his pockets were always filled with jelly beans to treat all of the little ones. Throughout his life, family was the main focus of his existence. He provided guidance, encouragement and unconditional love on a daily basis. Worth was a member of the Gettysburg Fire Department and the United Methodist Church. He served on the city council and was a 60-year member of the Masons. Worth's life will be treasured by his two daughters: Shari Bowden and Kay (Don) Archer, all of Gettysburg; one sister, Velma Miller of Rapid City; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Violet, who left him only two weeks prior, his parents, two brothers, six sisters and a son-in-law, Donnie Bowden.
