Elizabeth Ann O'Donnell Bassett "Betty", 90, formerly of Fayetteville, died
January 7, 2008, at home with her family in Manlius. She was born in Herkimer,
New York, and resided in Fayetteville since 1963. Betty graduated from
Herkimer High School and attended Katherine Gibbs in Boston. She lived and
worked in Ithaca, New York, where she met her husband, Charles H. Bassett.
They settled in Syracuse, where he worked for the firm of Hancock, Estabrook,
Ryan, Shove and Hust. Betty was a devoted and beloved wife and mother, raising
three children. Later she became a proud and caring grandmother, always
reminding her family of their Irish heritage and always quick with a humorous
and philosophical quip to deal with life's ups and downs. During her lo
life, Betty was faithful supporter of many charitable organizations, including
the Bishop Foery Foundation, Running Strong for American Indian Youth, Eastern
Paralyzed Veterans, Boys Town and Francis House. She was also a founding
contributor and member of the board of directors of the Charles H. Bassett
Youth Foundation in Owego, New York. Betty was predeceased by her husband,
Charles H. Bassett, in 1994; by two brothers, Daniel B. O'Donnell of Albany,
New York, and the Honorable James P. O'Donnell of Herkimer; as well as a
sister, Mabel O'Connell Lounsberry of Owego. She is survived by her thr
children, J. Thomas Bassett (Silvia de la Garza) of Manlius, Susan B.
Doolittle (Jim) of Manlius, and Robert Clarke Bassett of Anchorage, Alaska.
She is also survived by her brother, Philip D. O'Donnell of Herkimer, and by
six grandchildren, Marisa, Benjamin, Michael, Daivd and Elena Bassett, and
Sarah Doolittle, and by numerous nieces and nephews. Betty also leaves behind
her beautiful yellow canary, Sunny, who filled her days with joyful song. The
Bassett family would like to thank Betty's friends at the Alterra Wynwo
Residence in Manlius who filled her last years with friendship and
attentiveness. In accordance with Betty's wishes, there will be no calling
hours. A funeral service will be held at Holy Cross Church in Dewitt, N
York, on Friday, January 11, at 9:30 a.m., with burial following at Oakwood
Cemetery. Contributions in Betty's memory may be made to a favorite charity or
to the Betty Bassett Beautification Fund, P.O. Box 506, Owego, NY 13827, a
fund that honors and perpetuates Betty's love of flowers. Edward J. Ryan &
