Funeral Services for Shirley Ruth Bass, 87, of Lufkin, Texas, will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in Jacksonville, Texas, at Autry Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Jarrett Cemetery in the community of Gallatin, Texas.
After residing at Pinnacle Senior Living for several years, Shirley peacefully passed away on January 26, 2024, after a short illness in a local hospital.
Shirley was born in Cherokee County on April 17, 1936, to Violet Hamilton Broadhead and John Buford Broadhead. She lived in Mississippi as a young child during WWII while her father worked in a shipyard. Once the war was over, the family returned to Jacksonville, Texas. After graduating high school, she attended business school while working at the Liberty Hotel as a waitress. lt was around this time that she met her lifelong husband, Ralph Bass, and they married in 1955. Ralph joined the Air Force and, as a result, they lived in several states and also the Philippine Islands during the Vietnam war, while raising a family. Their last home together was in Jasper, Texas, where Shirley became a legal secretary and worked for over twenty years in a law firm. They were members of First Baptist Church of Jasper. She knew Jesus as her Savior and instilled a lasting foundation of Christian faith in her children.
She is preceded in death by her parents Violet and John Broadhead, her husband of forty-nine years, Ralph Bass, her son Kevin Bass, and her brother-in-law, Gary Stewart. She is survived by her daughters Kim Slack (married to Robert Slack) and Penny Page (married to Jake Page) and daughter-in-law, Lauren Bass, and her grandchildren, Kristen, Kelly, Sam, John and Sarah, and great grandchildren Ian, Lorna, Morgan, Adeline, and Leighton. She is also survived by her brother, Gerry Broadhead (married to Betty Broadhead), and her sister, Wanda Stewart.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon prior to services.
