CHURCHVILLE - John Harvey Bassett, of Churchville, was born in Montreal, Canada, on June 29, 1927. He eventually earned the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was known during most of his adult life as Dr. Bassett. He was known to his family and friends as Jack. Dr. Bassett succumbed to bone cancer on Nov. 26, 1999.

Dr. Bassett was the youngest child and only son of Harvey Ray Bassett and Tena Beryl (Whaley) Bassett. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Cormier Bassett, two sons, John Elliott Bassett of Rochester, New Hampshire, and Joel Harvey Bassett of Portland, Maine. Also surviving are a sister, Joyce Stewart of Burlington, Ontario, and a granddaughter, John Elliott's daughter, Kaleigh Marie.

Dr. Bassett was raised in Montreal and served in the Canadian Army upon high school graduation in 1944. He received his basic infantry training from the Roay 22nd Regiment and his advanced infantry from the Black Watch. Dr. Bassett's reserve regiment was the 17th Duke of York Royal
Canadian Hussars. During the Korean War, Dr. Bassett joined the American Army, serving two combat tours.

Between serving in World War II and the Korean War, Dr. Bassett worked primarily in banking, both in Montreal and Boston, Massachusetts. Upon returning from Korea, he undertook and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University, majoring in economics. The following year,
he received the A.M. in European and American history from the same institution. The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy was conferred upon Dr. Bassett in 1960 by Boston University. His doctoral subject area was English history. He remained a lifelong Anglophile, visiting the British Isles frequently.

Dr. Bassett held professorial positions at Boston University, the University of New Hampshire, and Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Massachusetts. He spent most of his career at Mount Wachusett as the Dean of Faculty.

Dr. and Mrs. Bassett retired to Virginia in 1992, drawn to agrarian Churchville and its likeness in many ways to rural England. He thoroughly enjoyed the people and surroundings of the Shenandoah Valley.

An interment ceremony will be held in Green Hills Cemetery at 3 p.m. today.
