In Memory of Marjorie Louise Purdue
September 20, 1923 ? November 22, 2014
Marjorie Louise Purdue passed away quietly in her sleep at the age of 91 on the morning of November 22, 2014 due to complications from congestive heart failure following a year of seriously declining health. She came into the world on September 20, 1923.
Her struggling family provided her with a loving but very strict environment, so following her Bosse High School graduation, she promptly married and had her first child by the tender age of 19. Within a short time she discovered that Mom was right; the marriage had been a mistake. She and husband, Bill Creekmur, divorced within a few years and shortly thereafter, Louise married the love of her life, Army Major Roland J. Bessette. They traveled throughout the United States and Germany during their time together. Sadly, the marriage ended in divorce and Louise bravely relocated to Texas to start her life anew, raising three children alone and without financial help. Thus, Dallas, Texas became her home for many, many years and it was at that time she changed her identification and began going by her first name, Marjorie. She eventually married an easy-going Jr. High math teacher by the name of William (Bill) Gerbetz who introduced her to the world of square dancing. They came to enjoy many years of dancing, traveling and rural country living until Bill's health issues interfered, culminating in his own death.
Marjorie moved to California in 2007 to be near her older daughter & favorite son-in-law. She and her beloved cocker spaniel, "Lady", loved their time together in her new home and her initial years in California were some of her best in late life. Unfortunately, she was moved to the Lompoc Convalescent Care Center after a debilitating fall, where she remained for four years preceding her death.
Marjorie is survived by her two daughters, Connie Creekmur Barlow (Lompoc, California) and Cheryl Bessette Spooner (Denton, Texas); and step-son, Ron Bessette, Jr. (Las Vegas, Nevada) of whom she was very fond. Also surviving are her two very dear sisters, Carolyn Purdue Bloss (Evansville, Indiana) and Mary Purdue Board (Silva, Missouri).
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Alexander East Chapel, with burial alongside her parents in the Purdue plot at Bates Hill Cemetery in Yankee Town, Indiana. Friends may visit from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
