'06 LLB - Robert V.R. Bassett has a son Charles H. Bassett who is a third-year
student in the Law School.
Charles Hibberd Bassett, an attorney for many years in Syracuse law firm of
Hancock and Estabrook, died April 10 while vacationing in Longboat Key, Fla.
He was 78 and resided in Fayetteville.
Mr. Bassett was a native of Owego. He joined the law firm of Hancock, Dorr,
Ryan and Shove in 1941. During his more than 50 years with the law firm, Mr.
Bassett served on the management committee and served as counsel to and on the
boards of several local corporations, including Cambridge Filter Corp., Wells
and Coverly Inc. and Allen Memorial House.
Mr. Bassett was a graduate of Owego Free Academy, a 1937 graduate of Dartmouth
College and a 1937 graduate of the Cornell University Law School. In addition
to his work with the Hancock law firm, Mr. Bassett also maintained his
father's law practice in Owego.
Mr. Bassett was involved with the founding of the Corinthian Club and i
sister organization, the Corinthian Foundation. He was a member of the
Onondaga County and New York State bar associations and the Democratic
National Committee.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Betty Ann O'Donnell; two sons,
J. Thomas of Manlius and Robert C. of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Susan B.
Doolittle of Manlius; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Immaculate Conception Church,
Fayetteville. Burial will be in Oakwood-Morningside Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Eaton-Tubbs-Sche
Funeral Home, Fayetteville. In addition, the family will receive friends from
3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the home of his daughter.
Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Charles H. Bassett Youth
Foundation, in care of the Owego National Bank, Owego.
