Retired Businessman Joseph Bassett Dies
Services for Joseph Y. Bassett Sr., 70, of 39 Lucernce Ave., retired
vice president of Price Piping Co., who died Wednesday, will be held at
2 p.m. Saturday in St. George's Episcopal Church, of which he was past
treasurer.
The Rev. Victor McGurie and the Rev. James Gilland will officiate.
Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be J.W. Bell, Claude Harrill, R.L. Nahikian, E.F.
Pierce, W.C. Price, E.B. Todd, N.A. Kuykendall and William Douglas.
Members of John A. Nichols Masonic Lodge will conduct graveside rites.
The lodge will open at 1 p.m.
Honorary pallbearers will be J.C. Dennis, E.C. Joyner, Joe Higdon, J.R.
Hughey, G.G. Gregg, J.R. Pinner, Dr. R. C. Nailling, Dr. W.E. Farmer,
members of Biltmore Lions Club and John A. Nichols Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Bassett, a veteran of World War I, was a member of John A. Nichols
Lodge and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was co-chairman of the
fund drive for Oxford Orphanage and Masonic and Eastern Star Homes.
A member of the Asheville Shrine Club, Oasis Shrine Temple of Charlotte
he had been a member of the Biltmore Lions Club for 16 years and was a
past president.
Mr. Bassett was president of the Buncombe County Association for the
Blind, on the board of the North Carolina Association for the Blind from
1964 to 1966 and was chairman of Lions Broom Sales in Asheville for the
past five years.
He had dedicated his civic activities to service for the blind and less
fortunate people. In 1968, he received the Sam Cathey Award for
outstanding service to the blind.
The body will remain at Groce Funeral Home, where the family will
receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
