David Mitchell "Mitch" Bass lived his life as a storyteller-not just in the stories he told, but in the way he lived, loved, and connected with people. On January 4, 2026, he passed away, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, and moments that will continue to be told and retold by those who knew him best.
Born on May 6, 1957 in Porterville, California, Mitch carried a genuine zest for life that was unmistakably his own. He had a way of drawing people in-through conversation, humor, curiosity, and an openness that made others feel seen and welcome. Whether sharing a story, recalling a memory, or simply being present, Mitch left an impression that lasted far beyond the moment.
Above all else, Mitch loved his family. He shared his life with his wife, Kelly, and the bond they built together was rooted in love, family, loyalty, and shared experiences that shaped who they were-individually and together. His presence was steady, meaningful, and deeply felt. Mitch believed that life was meant to be lived fully. He valued connection over perfection, moments over milestones, and people over pretense. Those who knew him will remember his ability to talk with anyone and the way he made even ordinary moments feel worth remembering.
Mitch's calling to serve others found a natural home in the Independence Fire Department, where he retired as a Captain after 23 years of service. He was proud of the work-not only because it allowed him to help people in their most vulnerable moments, but because it also gave him something he valued just as deeply: time with his boys while they were growing up. Alongside his career in public service, Mitch was the proud owner of an upholstery business for more than 40 years, finding satisfaction in honest work, craftsmanship, and the simple joy of bringing new life to something well loved. For Mitch, success was never measured only by rank or title, but by presence-showing up for his family, his crew/clients, and his community.
Fatherhood was one of Mitch' s greatest joys. He was immensely proud of his sons, Matt Bass, Austin Bass (Rose Thomas), and Taylor Bass (Cheyenne Bass), and of the men they became. As his family grew with marriage to Kelly, so did his heart. Mitch welcomed Kyla Bradley (Jason Bradley) and Emma Bittner as his own, embracing family not by definition, but by love, commitment, and connection.
Becoming a grandfather-his cherished role as "Brandpa"-was a dream fulfilled. His grandchildren, Karly Bass (15), King Bass (12), Saylor Bradley (6), Lennox Bass (6), and Mayor Bass (March 2026), were a source of pure joy and hope, and he looked forward to every moment he could spend watching them grow, learn, and laugh. His stories, humor, and presence will live on through them.
Mitch's greatest desire was to introduce others to Jesus-not through words alone, but through conversation, kindness, and the genuine way he loved people. His faith was something he lived every day, offering grace, humor, and compassion to those around him. In keeping with Mitch's wishes, his going home is not marked by a somber farewell, but by a celebration of a life well lived and a faith well held. He looked forward to being in the presence of the Lord, and, true to form, often joked that he hoped to be reunited with his beautiful hair when he arrived. His humor, faith, and joy remain part of the story he leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Mitch by making a donation in his name to SAFE (Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund through the KC Metropolitan Crime Commission) continuing his legacy of kindness and serving others. The Celebration of Life event will be announced at a later date.
