D.C. Giddings, Capitalist and Banker, Dead
Succumbs at Home in Brenham Sunday Morning

Brenham, Texas, November 27 - D.C. Giddings, banker, capitalist, planter, member of one of the most distinguished old families of Texas, died at his home in Brenham Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, aged 64 years. For the last nine weeks he had suffered intensely from injuries received in an automobile accident, and in the last few days complications developed which resulted in his death.
Mr. Giddings was born in Brenham January 27, 1863, on the same spot where the handsome Giddings home now stands. He was a son of the late Colonel D.C. Giddings and Malinda C. Lusk Giddings; was educated at the Brenham public schools, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, of which he was one of the first students, and the University of Virginia.
In 1881, when 18 years of age, he became associated with his father and uncle in the banking house of Giddings & Giddings, the oldest bank in this section of Texas, and at the time of his death was still the active head of the bank established in 1866 by J.D. and D.C. Giddings.
In 1884 he was married to Miss Carrie Bassett, daughter of the late William H. Bassett, who survives him, together with three children, Mrs. E.P. Anderson and D.C. Giddings Jr. of Brenham and Mrs. John D. Rogers of Navasota.
Mr. Giddings was prominent in State political circles and wielded great influence in the Democratic party, though he steadily declined to run for any high political office. He was president of the Brenham Compress Company, president of the South Texas Cotton Mills and chairman of the executive committee of Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation Association, having extension farming interests in the Brazos bottoms of Washington and Waller Counties.

He was charter member and the first exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge of Brenham. A leader in financial, civic, agricultural and educational enterprises, Mr. Giddings was at the head of many movements for the development and progress of Brenham and Washington County. Recently he had been deeply interested in the project to raise Blinn Memorial College to junior college rank, and while a patient in the Brenham Hospital after the accident that resulted in his death, he sent his check for a large amount and urged others to immediately make their donations to help the school. Every worthy public enterprise had his generous support, and he gave largely to charity.
Private funeral services will be held from the family residence at 4 o’clock Monday afternoon, with the Reverend S. Moylan Bird of Marshall, former rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Brenham, officiating. Interment will be made at Prairie Lea Cemetery near his father and mother.
