Andrew Harrell ?Tony? Bass, passed peacefully at home on the afternoon of the 25th of August 2014. He was born in Washington, D.C. to Andrew Harrell Bass, Sr. and Margaret Gill Bass.

His interest in engineering was sparked early in life, and he was known to disassemble any and all electronics to find out how they worked, and also for occasionally leaving them disassembled. Fond of his airplane, he also raced on a cutting-edge sailboat while he and his family lived in Sydney, Australia.

After receiving a degree in physics from Lincoln University, Tony went on to complete a Masters and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on photovoltaics when solar technology was less widely known. Interested in space and technology he spent time as a professor at Texas Southern University and working at GE and NASA. He also built several businesses as an investor and entrepreneur.
His kindness, compassion and sensitivity defined him to those he met and knew. He was an enthusiastic mentor to younger people interested in science and supported children through his involvement in UNICEF ? serving for several years as the Southwest Region board chairman. He was active in Kiwanis and volunteered as a driver for the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Tony was an active member of the Masonic community in Texas. Initiated 4/14/2004; Passed 5/6/2004; Raised 2/3/2005. Past Master and Life Member Jacques DeMolay #1390; Golden Trowel 2013. KYCH. Past Eminent Commander Ruthven #2. Life Member of the Royal Order of Scotland.
Tony is survived by his wife of 43 years, Freda Wilkerson. The two met at the Farm & Wilderness summer camp in Vermont at the age of 15. He is also survived by two daughters, Drew and Callie; his sister, Gill Bass; nephew, Jackson Young; in-laws Joyce, Edward, Elizabeth and Tetsuki, and a loving extended family of cousins and his large dog Potato, all of whom remember him fondly and greatly mourn his passing.
The funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o?clock in the morning on Saturday, the 30th of August at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
