divorced. He married (2) Clara Sult on 17 Feb 1963 [or before 1947, See Clara's obituary]. Clara was born 25 May 1922 in Shawsville, Virginia. She died 6 Jan 2001.
Earl was a graduate of George Washington University. He owned a paper and gift business.

J. Earl Bassett - Businessman
J. Earl Bassett, 90, the former owner of the J. Earl Paper Co. and the Hospital Gift Shop Supply Co., died Jun 19 at Sibley Memorial Hospital of complications after surgery for an intestinal blockage. Mr. Bassett was a fourth-generation Washingtonian. He graduated from McKinley Tech High School and George Washington University, where he also received a law degree. He was a chemist with the D.C. Paper Mill and later a salesman for R.P. Andrews Paper Co. before 1947, when he founded the J. Earl Bassett Paper Company with his wife, Clara. Later they founded the Hospital Gift Shop Supply Co., a wholesaler of items for hospital gift shops. On retiring in 1988, Mr. Bassett did volunteer work at Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale. He had lived in Cheverly for the last 32 years. In addition to his wife, of Cheverly, survivors include two sons, John E. Bassett Jr. of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Steve Bassett of Ellicott City; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
