- 3B3233A3955. Roy Luke Bassett, son of Clyde Elmer and Neva Faye (Doyel) Bassett, was born 30 Oct 1948 in Hayden, Missouri. He died 23 Sep 1994. He married Marilyn Jean Manville on 27 Feb 1971 in Lebanon, New Hampshire. She was born 16 Feb 1951 in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Roy was Sheriff of Maries County, Missouri, and was shot to death by a criminal that had been stopped on highway 63 south of Vienna by a Missouri Highway Patrolman. He was also in the Air Force and was a real estate agent in addition to being County Sheriff in Vienna, Missouri.

Roy was born on October 30, 1948, in Maries County near Hayden. He is the son of Clyde Elmer and Nova Faye Doyel Bassett. Roy graduated from Vienna High School, Vienna, Missouri, in 1966. Shortly after graduation he joined the United States Air Force and worked as a flight engineer on
several types of airplanes. He is a Vietnam veteran. In 1969 while stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Alabama, he met Marilyn, who was also stationed at Maxwell with the Air Force. He served in the Air Force from 1966 to 1973.
Marilyn was born on February 16, 1951, in Hanover, New Hampshire. She is the daughter of Paul Ovila and Virginia Marie (Rancourt) Manville. In June 1969 Marily graduated from Lebanon High School, Lebanon, New Hampshire. Shortly after graduation she joined the United States Air Force and worked as a photo lab technician. She served in the air force from 1969 to 1971. She received a bachelors of arts degree in individual studies from Columbia College, Columbia, Missouri, in 1979. In 1980, she received her masters degree in management from Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri.
On February 27, 1971, Roy and Marily were married in Lebanon, New Hampshire. They have one daughter and two sons. Michelle Lee was born on April 28 1972 at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Alabama. Paul Michael was born on December 22, 1977, at St. Mary's Health Center, Jefferson City, Missouri. John Christopher was born march 10, 1988, at St. Mary's Health Center, Jefferson City, Missouri.
Upon leaving the air force in 1973, Roy and Marilyn moved to Dixon, Missouri. Roy was a real estate broker from 1974 to 1984. He was a broker with Strout Realty, Inc. anc Century 21. In 1984 Roy was elected sheriff of Maries County and in 1988 was re-elected for second term. Marilyn has worked for the Department of the Army, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, since 1975. She is currently a contract specialist/contracting officer at the Directorate of Contracting.
The Bassett family are active members of the Visitation Catholic Church, Vienna, Missouri. Both Roy and Marily have served on the Parish Council. Roy is also a member of the National Sheriffs' Association, Missouri Sheriffs' Association, Lions Club, VFW, American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. From 1982 to 1985, Marilyn was a member of the Toastmasters Club #493 at Fort Leonard Wood. Since 1986 she has been a member of the Ozark Chapter of the American Society of Military
Comptrollers at Fort Leonard Wood.

Roy Luke Bassett
Roy Luke Bassett, 45, of Vienna, was born on October 30, 1948, in Maries County, a son of Clyde Elmer and Neva Faye Doyel Bassett, and departed this life on September 23, 1994 at 3:25 P.M., in the Phelps County Medical Center, Rolla, as a result of a gunshot wound while investigating an auto mishap.
Mr. Bassett was united in marriage on February 27, 1971, to the former Miss Marilyn Jean Manville, and to this union three children were born. He was preceded in death by his father on June 21, 1978, and his father-in-law, Paul Manville, on December 5, 1985.
Mr. Bassett was a member of the Visitation Catholic Church, Vienna American Legion, Vienna Lions Club, Maries County, Democratic Club, and Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, all in Vienna; Argyle Knights of
Columbus and Argyle VFW, both in Argyle; Disbaled American Veterans Association; and Missouri Sherrifs Association. He was a United States Air Force veteran of Vietnam.
Mr. Bassett was reared in Maries county and a 1966 graduate of Maries R-I High School, Vienna. He served seven years in the U.S. Air Force prior to moving to Vienna in 1974 where he first operated Strout Realty and later Century 21 Realty. He was elected maried County Sheriff in 1984 and at the
time of his death was serving in his third term in that office.
Those left to mourn the passing of Mr. Bassett include; his wife, Marilyn J. Bassett, of the home near Vienna; two sons, Paul Bassett and John Bassett, both of the home; one daughter, Michele Bassett, Vienna; one granddaughter, Brianna Jean Bassett; his mother Mrs. Faye Bassett, Dixon; four brothers, Willis Bassett, Eagle, Colorado, Bob Bassett, Columbia, Arnold Bassett, Dixon, and Kenneth Bassett, Waynesville; one sister, Mrs. Marilyn Davis, Rolla; Brothers-in-law; Sisters-in-law; Nephews; Nieces;
and other relatives and friends.
A rosary service was held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home in Vienna.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Visitation Catholic Church in Vienna with the Rev. Tom Waickman officiating. Burial was in teh Visitation Cemetery, Vienna.
A memorial in the name of Roy L. Bassett has been established for the education of his children with envelopes available at the Vienna Office of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Vienna.
