Negro Held For Slaying Planter in Scott County

Meridian, Miss., May 9 ? (AP) ? H. Clay Bassett, 60, a white farmer of Harperville, died today in a Meridian hospital from gunshot wounds and a fractured skull which officers said were inflicted by a negro tenant.
Sheriff D.D. Austin, of Scott County, reported that Luther Benton, 45-year-old negro tenant on the Harperville place, surrendered to City Marshal Howard McCrory and was turned over to him in connection with the farmer?s death.
The sheriff said Benton made a statement to officers on the shooting but its contents were not disclosed.
Hospital attaches said the farmer appeared to have been beaten severely.
Bassett is survived by his widow and four daughters, Misses Mary, Marian, Lois, and Mildred Bassett.
