Jerry Freeman Bassett (1932-2016) (Picture included)
Jerry Freeman Bassett, 84, of Springfield, OR passed away June 15, 2016. He was born February 7, 1932, in Springfield, MO to Earl and Zada (Packer) Bassett. He married Marjorie Lou Bell in Lubbock, TX, in 1953. Jerry lived in Springfield, MO, until the age of 5 years when he moved with his parents to southern California. He lived in the San Bernardino and San Diego areas, where he graduated from high school, attended college in Abilene, Texas, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Personnel Management from San Diego State College. He served in the United States Air Force from February 1951 until November 1954. Jerry was a gospel preacher working with local Churches of Christ in California and Oregon for more than 50 years. He served as an Elder with the Church of Christ on Coburg Road in Eugene. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, backpacking and camping. He was also interested in baseball, football, and basketball, both collegiate and professional teams. He was a member of the Emerald Empire Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his son, Darrell Freeman Bassett; son, Gregory James Bassett; daughter, Leanna Cymbala; brother, Don Bassett; five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 9, 2016, at the Coburg Road Church of Christ, 1005 Coburg Rd., Eugene, OR 97401. Arrangements by Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel, Cottage Grove, OR.
