Sylvia Bassett Brown (1940-2015)

Gates County, NC - Sylvia Jean (Clark) Bassett Brown, 74, passed away in her sleep at home Tuesday, July 14, 2015 in Gates County, NC. Sylvia was born in Carlisle, PA Nov 18, 1940, the daughter of the late WWII hero Lt. Col. William A. Filer, KIA, and late DaLorris A. (Alkire Filer) Clark, and adopted by the late Commander Harry L. Clark. She is survived by: her husband, Alan Brown, of 20 years; her siblings, Judith Bowie, Kathleen Sullivan, and Tim Clark; her children, Sharon McMurry, Sue McMurry, Lori LaPenna, Lawrence Bassett, Lance Bassett & Leslie Bassett Higginbotham; her grandchildren, Nicole, Christina, Michelle, Abigail, Joey, Josh, AJ, Chase, Delana, and her children.
Sylvia graduated in 1958 from Annapolis High School, was a diligent housewife & mother for many years, volunteered as Girl Scout troop leader, Boy Scout den mother, and Little League team mom. In the 1980's she completed her MS in Education from ODU, volunteered with debate & taught math at Brandon Junior High, then TCC & ECPI until her retirement in 2001. She loved gardening, playing the piano, and watching her grandchildren grow up.
