Richard J. Bassett Sr., 1934-2006 (Picture included)
ALTON - Richard J. Bassett Sr., 71, of 13C Spruce Terrace, died at his home on Sunday, April 23, 2006. He was born in Sandown, NH on October 29, 1934, the son of Raymond K. and Priscilla (Knights) Bassett.
Mr. Bassett was a long time resident of Alton. He retired from the Alton Town Highway Department and had been a member of the Alton Volunteer Fire Department and Alton Volunteer Ambulance. For years he rang the fire alarm every Saturday at 1pm, a long-held town tradition. He was an active member of the community and also served as the Alton Old Home Week Chairman. He was a member of the Winnipisaukee Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star. He was a former resident of Northwood where he also served as a member of the Volunteer Fire Department.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Robert and Norman of Sandown and a sister Eva (Bassett) Phillips of Lancaster.
He is survived by his 6 chileren, Richard J. Bassett Jr. & Janet (Hanson) Bassett of Meredith, Benjamin Bassett and Donna (Lance) Bassett of Knoxville, TN, Lorraine and Bob Porter of Crawfordville, FL, Mary and Alan Barrett of ALton, Daniel Bassett of Concord, and April and Philip Martinez of Bradford, ME.
He was 1 of 16 children and is survived by 3 sisters and 9 brothers: Hazel Marlow of Sandown, Eleanor Bassett of Sandown, Mrs. Richard (Martha) Sargent of Springfield, VA, Charles Bassett of Newfields, Raymond S. Bassett of Boscawen, Donald Bassett of Northwood, Wendell Bassett of Epsom, William Bassertt of Greensborn, GA, David Bassett of East Hampstead, Kenneth Bassett, Carroll Bassett and Irving Bassett all of Sandown. He had 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He had numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Community Church of Alton on Church Street in Alton, NH on Sunday, May 7th at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alton Fireman Association C/O Alton Fire Department, PO Box 472, Alton, NH 03809.
