PORT SANILAC: Donald B. Bassett, age 89, died July 27, 2-017 at Sandusky Medical Care Facility in Sandusky. He was born September 12, 1927 in Bristol, Connecticut, to William and Stella Bassett.
Don was an educator for 34 years in the Grosse Pointe Public School System, both as an elementary and middle school principal. He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved the land and nature. In retirement, Don hunted and fished to his heart's content, but always had time to play a round of golf, even having the distinction of once making a "Hole in One" on the 18th hole at Huron Shores Golf Club and a second one in Leesburg, FL.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter Anne (Ronald) Hasenbusch and their sons, Ronald Jr. and Zachary; daughter Nannette Remus and her sons, Kyle O'Dell and Brendan (Brianna) Remus; daughter Patrice Bono and her daughters, Megan (Joseph) Swailes and Samatha Bono and her fiancé, Andrew Klenner; and a sister Shirley (Carl) Tabar.
Don is preceded in death by his two brothers, Bob and Bill Bassett and his sister Barbara Ebel.
Mass will be 11:00 AM Thursday August 3, 2017 at Ave Maria Parish, St. Mary Catholic Church, Port Sanilac. Bishop Robert Fisher, Fr. Brian Chabala and Fr. Donald Eppenbrock will officiate.
Visitation will be 2 - 9 PM Wed. at the Pomeroy Funeral Home, Lexington and 10 - 11 AM Thursday at the Church. Scripture reading will be at 4:00 PM Wed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's name to Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Port Sanilac Fire Dept., or the charity of the donor?s choice.
