Newtown

Newtown, Oct. 1 ? The funeral of Charles Howard Bassett, who died after only a few hours sickness of heart failure on Friday, was held on Sunday afternoon from his late home where a large gathering assembled to attend the services which were conducted by Rev. Charles A. Tibbals, rector of St. John?s Episcopal church of Sandy Hook. The pall bearers were Edward French of Shelton, Frederick French of Monroe, John Carley of Milford, John Gilbert of Huntington. Interment was in Berkshire cemetery.
Charles Howard Bassett, only son of Albert and the late Ellen Richards Bass, was a native and lifelong resident of the town .He attended the district school and Newtown Academy. In business he was, besides the village blacksmith, the first to accommodate the townspeople I the automobile garage business, having established himself in the borough of Newtown and later in the center at Sandy Hook where his energies brought him a large patronage. He was of a sunny temperament with a countenance typical of the good nature that characterized him.
He is survived by his father, his wife, Clara Belle Winton Bassett, and two small boys, Harold Winton and Charles Howard, to whom the sympathy of the community is extended in their sudden bereavement.
Among those who attended the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. John Carley of Milford, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Carley of Black Rock, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nichols of Shelton, Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Oppe of Shelton, Mr. and Mrs. Leaman Osborn of Naugatuck, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Brophy of Bristol, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brophy of Thomaston.

William McDonald, an expert horse shoer, has taken a position with A.W. Bassett & Son at Sandy Hook. They have had a busy season. A.W.Bassett & Son have rented the Niantic mill property and will do carriage painting there. Howard Bassett, of the firm, is one of the best carriage painters hereabouts and is sure to have a busy season.
