Joseph Avery Bassett was born in Pulaski County a few miles northeast of Dixon, Missouri, on October 16, 1918. He was the sixth son of Elmer Ray and Cora Ellen (Johnson) Bassett, daughter of Monroe and Naomi O. Johnson.
Joseph attended school at High Point near Dixon, Missouri.
Erma Bassett was born in Pulaski County on Juily 29, 1922, the youngest child of Arthur Collier and Beatrice C. (Akley) Collier). Joseph and Erma were married on September 19, 1940, and lived 46 years near Dixon, Missouri. They are the parents of four children: Charles Joseph, born September 10, 1941; Keith Swane, October 16, 1945; Linda Joyce, September 3, 1951; and Erma Laverne, November 28, 1954.
Joe was employed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, for the AAFES as service station attendant and assistant manager, retiring on January 1, 1976. Joseph died May 17, 1986.
All their children are married. Charles married Barbara A. Baker November 18, 1962. They have two daughters: Leasa Arlene, born January 7, 1964, and Carol Jeanette, born February 5, 1967. Leasa married David Day June 19, 1982.
Keith married Helen Jordan January 1, 1966. They had one son, Jerry Swane, born march 22, 1966. Keith and Genie J. Glass were married May 26, 1985.
Linda married William Conover III May 7, 1986. Linda adopted Billie J. Conover, born October 8, 1977; adopted October 9, 1986.
E. Laverne married John Bruce Stnasberry April 10, 1976. They have two sons; Christopher Allen, born February 6, 1986, and Nicholas Allen, born February 23, 1989.
