Arthur Freeman Monroe Bassett, oldest son of Elmer and Cora (Johnson) Bassett, was born January 29, 1905. On December 14, 1934, he was married to Agnes Gocke, daughter of Frank and Agnes (Hutcheson) Gocke. Arthur was one of nine children and Agnes, born October 2, 1909, was one of six children in the Gocke family. Both grew up and lived in Maries County for most of their lives. After their marriage they lived in St. Charles for seven years, then moved back to Maries County, when their first child was four years old.
(1) Cora Agnes, born April 13, 1937, married James Prater of Dixon. They have three children; Tammy, age 16; Richard, age 14; and Artie, age 12.
(2) Arthur Ray was born July 6, 1941. He married Carolyn Lou Jones July 20, 1963, at Campground Church. They have four sons. Michael Ray born July 12, 1964, married Valle Russell on November 2, 1985. She was born April 7, 1960, daughter of Warden Russell. They have one child, Kayle Michelle, born July 10, 1986.
Daniel Earl Basett, born October 16, 1966. Daniel married Patricia Ann Snugg at Prairieview Baptist Church in Elk City, Oklahoma, August 10, 1985. They have 2 sons, Brandon Earl, born July 16, 1986 and Jackie Ray, born March 1, 1989. teven Douglas, born July 22, 1970 and Timothy David, February 18, 1974.
(3) Ruth Ann, born October 31, 1948, married Jim Malone and they hav three sons, Curt, still at home; Kevin, married August 26, 1989, to Victoria Shree Strein; another son born April 23, 1976, still at home.
(4) Elmer Franklin born October 30, 1951, married Helen Boulware, daughter of Everett and Myrtle Boulware. They have two children, Milanda, age 16, and Ron, age 8.
(5) Larry Lee, born February 8, 1956, married Connie Helton, daughter of Gene and Evelyn Helton. They live in Maries County and have no children.
Cora Agnes and Arthur Ray attended Clifty Grade School and graduated from Vienna High School. The other three, Ruth Ann, Elmer Franklin and Larry Lee, attended Hayden Heights School and later attended Dixon High School, when their parents moved to Dixon because of failing health of their father.
Arthur Freeman passed away at the age of 63. On July 12, 1970, Agnes Gocke Bassett married Thomas R. Crider, of Belle, born February 2, 1903. Thomas passed away from a heart attack, September 7, 1971.
