Hattie E. Bassett, as a young girl, taught school in District 71 in Shawnee County. After several years she attended the Kansas State Normal School in Emporia, and graduated from that school. While in Emporia, her younger brother, Albert, went to Emporia and attended the same school. Hattie became principal of the Harper High School for a time. She later was called to be an instructor in the Normal School. In 1901 she left teaching to marry Harry L. Aldrich in Dover. Hattie and Harry were married September 17, 1901, by the author of "In His Steps", by Charles M. Sheldon at her parent's home in downtown Dover, Kansas. Harry's brother, Walter, was a doctor in Vermont and Harry always wanted to follow his footsteps. At this time the Kansas Medical College was started on the campus at Washburn College. Both Harry and Hattie enrolled in the school and received a degree. The two of them went to Chicago where Harry enrolled in the medical school at the University of Chicago. She studied right with her husband. They returned to Topeka and opened an office in North Topeka. The flood of 1903 came and washed them out. They then went to Caney, Kansas in Montgomery County, Kansas and opened an office. They soon opened a hospital in Caney and ran it for several years. Having always been interested in education, she was one of the principal founders of the Caney Library.
