Rev. S.R. Bass Dies At Belmont, N.C.
Was Once Pastor In Greenville
Overheating And Ice Drinks Fatal
GREER, July 5.-(Special) ? The numerous friends in Greer of Rev. S.R. Bass, of Belmont, N.C., were shocked and grieved to learn of his untimely death which occurred on last Friday morning at 7:15 o?clock at his home.
Mr. Bass became ill on last Thursday evening, after having spent practrically the entire afternoon working in his flower garden where he became overheated, after coming into his home drank an ice cold milk shake and immediately grew ill and continued so until death relieved his suffering.
He was born November 15, 1869, in Laurens county, and was the son of Geo. W. Bass and Isabel Nabors Bass. He was educated in the Owings school., Fountain Inn schools, Presbyterian college atr Clinton and Columbia Theological seminary at Columbia. Thirty-six years ago he was married to Miss Laura Blakely, of Tilersville, S.C. and to this union was born one son, Lionel B. Bass. In 1923 Mr. Bass accepted the pastorate of the First Baptist church at Belmont, N.C., and was serving his church at the time of his death. Besides this church he has served as pastor of churches at Langley, Aiken, Barnwell, McCormick, Greenville and Spartanburg counties.
For a number of years he was pastor of the Baptist chruch at Duncan, and while here joined the order of A.F.M. and at this place he retained his membership. He was at one time chaplain of the State hospital in Columbia, while he was pastor of the New Brookland Baptist church. At the time of his death he was chaplain of the Rotary club and promoter of the Boy Scout movement at Belmont.
The funeral was held on Sunday morning at 10 o?clock at the Firest Baptist church at Belmont, conducted by Rev. W.C. Barrett, D.D., pastor of the First Baptist church at Laurinburg, N.C. The interment followed in rosemont cemetery, Clinton, S.C., at 3 o?clock in the afternoon. The deacons of the church former an honorary escort.
Besides his widow and son, Mr. Bass is survived by a grandson, Lionel B. Bass, Jr., also one brother, T.M. Bass, of Columbia; one sister, Mrs. J.W. Harvey, of Aiken, and one half-sister, Mrs. Mary E. Wilson, of Marion, N.C., the latter being 84 years of age. Those attending the funeral from here were Claude Hemphill and fmaily, also Charles W. Wilson and family, from Marion, N.C. Mr. Bass had often visited here where he had numerous friends.
