JOSEPHINE BEEDE BASSETT (1917)
The subject of this sketch died on the morning of January 5. As we sit down to write a few lines in behalf of this noble woman we are at a loss to express in words her true worth. Mrs. Bassett was born at Beede Hill, this town, October 18, 1840, the daughter of Horation and Hannah (Fellows) Beede. She was twice married. Her first husband was Albert Blaisdell, of Raymond, and to them was born one son, Albert B., now a well known clothier of Haverhill. Her first husband died at an early age. In 1866 she was married to George W. Bassett, of this town, where they have since resided. To them were born two sons, Joseph P., now representing this town in the legislature, and George S., a popular merchant of Sandown. These upright and manly sons were proud to call her mother, and to us she was next to our mother as she was to many another.
Mrs. Bassett was one of those even tempered women with the kindest of dispositions, a smile and cheering word for all, content to live the simple life of a humble farmer's wife, ever brightening the home with her cheerfulness. Many years ago she united with the Methodist Church and has ever been faithful to her vows.
She will be greatly misses in the household of her son, Joseph P., whose wife, Eva, has cared for and watched over her during her long illness and the ever faithful grandchildren she loved so well and had just reason to be proud of. Much sympathy goes out to the aged husband.
The funeral was held at the home Sunday and was largely attended. Rev. Mr. Sutton officiating. Burial was at the village cemetery.
