      Welch’s Syrian Colony is Small

Welch has only a few Syrian-American families, but all of the have been successful in business, including confectioneries, restaurants and department stored.
The leader of the small colony generally is recognized to be Elias A. Bassett, who was born at Kafair, Syria, in 1892 and came to Welch in 1910.
Here he started a small mercantile business and then went into the restaurant business with his brother, Charles Bassett. In 1914, he opened a confectionery, the Palace of Sweets.
Charles Bassett served in the U.S. army during the World war, and after he returned to Syria and married Magla Khourie. They had three sons.
