- After Pierpont Bassett's first marriage he settled on a farm two miles southwest of Farmer Village, Seneca County, New York, and remained there for the rest of his life.
Although successful as a farmer, he was endowed by nature to be a mathematician. From some one in the past he inherited a love for figures, and the gift through him was handed down to some of his children and grandchildren. His favorite occupation in his leisure hours at home was to tip back in his chair with his slate before him working out some problem in arithmetic, and often in the field he would be seen to stop his team and begin figuring on some example he had in mind.
From the Seneca County Courier, 1873
At the Teachers Institute held at Seneca Falls the last day of the Session, I.H. Stout, Principal of the Union School at Farmer Village, introduced Bassett's Method of Equivalents as applied to the solution of problems in Alligation. He illustrated the same in a novel and interesting manner. From the fact that his system originated with Pierpont Bassett, a farmer residing in Covert, in this county, it attracted considerable attention.
He often engaged in school teaching in the winter, and it is remembered that he gave each scholar five cents who memorized the state capitals. But his mathematical mind did not hinder him from raising good crops, especially good watermelons, and nothing pleased him more than to treat his friends with this delectable fruit. In religion he was a man of deep convictions. While a young man he joined the Farmer Village Baptist Church, and to the end of his life was a faithful, consistent member.
