Turner, Tommy C. 8/5/1939 - 5/18/2016 Ann Arbor Tommy was born on August 5, 1939 to Cessel and Winnie Turner of San Angelo, Texas. He grew up on the frontier, in a west Texas town where his father was the county sheriff. He attended an elementary school built in the parade ground of an old cavalry fort (Fort Concho). After high school, he attended San Angelo College and received his B.S. in Psychology from Abilene Christian University. During his undergraduate years, he was president of numerous campus organizations, drum major of the band, played the lead in a number of theatrical productions, and received several academic honors. Tommy Turner volunteered for the US Navy Officer Candidate School in 1962 and was commissioned as Ensign only days prior to the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served aboard the destroyer U.S.S. William. R. Rush operating in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. He was transferred to the USS Caddo Parish in 1963 and participated in restoring order in the Dominican Republic. After his military service, Tommy came to Ann Arbor, where he was employed as Director of Statistical Services in the Office of the Registrar at the University of Michigan. He also began his graduate studies at UM, receiving an M.A. in Education (psychology) in 1969. He did additional course work toward the Ph.D., with research on the diagnostic implications of children's human figure drawings. He began his career as a psychotherapist with an internship at Livingston County Community Mental Health Services. In 1990, he became affiliated with Huron Valley Consultation Center in Ann Arbor and continued in the group private practice for twenty-four years, providing psychotherapy to adults, children, and couples. Tommy had many interests outside of his work, including dancing, swimming, and sailing, but his greatest love was singing. He was a member of Measure for Measure: A Men's Choral Society for nineteen seasons. He was also a choir member and soloist at St. Clare Episcopal Church. In addition to his musical ministry at church, he served on the vestry, several commissions, and headed the Adopt-a-Highway program for several years. Mr. Turner is survived by his first wife, Linda Henny, ne Bassett and their two children Erin (Trent) Stevens and Dana (Jonathon) Queen. He is also survived by his current wife, Linda Elise Turner, ne Ricciardi and her children Benjamin (Jessica) Ricciardi, Christopher Ricciardi, and Elizabeth Ricciardi-Streeter (Benjamin Streeter) and five grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday, May 23, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Nie Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor. A funeral service will be held at St. Clare Episcopal Church, 2309 Packard Road, Ann Arbor on Tuesday, May 24, at 4:30 p.m. A reception will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Clare Episcopal Church Endowment Fund or Abilene Christian University, Abilene, TX.
