- Ruby Wofford Bassett
October 28, 1923 ? February 6, 2016
Ruby Wofford (Ruby Bassett) was born on October 28, 1923, in Washington, Pennsylvania. She was 1 of 6 children from the union of the late Arthur and Lula Wofford. When, in her youth, the family relocated to the Homestead area where she was educated in the Homestead Public School System and attended Clark Memorial Baptist Church. There she accepted Jesus Christ as her savior. Ruby was a longtime member of Clark Memorial serving on the Usher Board faithfully for 29 years. She was active in the church until her health no longer permitted her to do so, Ruby was united in marriage in July 7, 1941 to James "Red" Bassett. This union would produce 8 children and last for 54 years. Ruby was a homemaker and caregiver for her entire life, She and Red raised their family in the then close knit community of Glen Hazel where large families were the rule and the Bassett home was a gathering place. Ruby's open door policy to the children in the neighborhood endeared her to all. Everyone was treated with equal love and affection. She always has something ready to eat for anyone who answered "yes" to her famous question "you hungry baby?" Her greatest fulfillment came from taking care of her family. Ruby and Red shared a deep devotion for one another and beyond that they were best friends. They truly enjoyed each other's company and after Red retired they spent much quality time together. During Red's illness she was his devoted caregiver. On February 6, 2016, Ruby Bassett was called home to service in the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Bassett, Sr.; precious son, Richard L (Richie) Bassett; and siblings: Julia Jackson, Leroy Wofford, Dorothy Anthony, Anna Mae Wofford, and Beulah Barnett. She leaves to honor and cherish her memory her loving children: James Bassett of Atlanta; Delores (John) Miller and Barbara Ann Gantt of Pittsburgh; William Henry Bassett of Boston; Evelyn (Barrett) Franklin of Homestead; Ronald (Marilyn) Bassett of Atlanta; and Andre Bassett of Washington, D.C.; 20 grand and great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and good friends too numerous to mention.
