In Chambers County, W. Alfred Stretton, 66, of Royalston, Mass., was killed in a pileup on Interstate 10 at Hankamer, the DPS in Beaumont said. The wreck occurred about 300 feet from the intersection of I-10 and Texas 61, two miles south of Hankamer.
DPS safety officer Jimmy Kirksey said an 18-wheel tractor trailer was parked legally on the freeway shoulder. Kirksey said that as a pickup truck and a car approached the parked vehicle, the pickup, driven by Hubert Hout of Baton Rouge, collided with the 18-wheeler.
The pickup then collided with a nearby car, driven by Anthony Plummer of Baytown. Plummer?s car crossed in the freeway?s opposite lanes and collided with a fourth car driven by Stretton, Kirksey said.
Stretton was taken to Chambers County Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday. Plummer was treated and released from that hospital for minor injuries.

W. Alfred Stretton, 66, Deputy Tax Collector Victim of Auto Crash
ROYALSTON ? W. Alfred Stretton, 66, of Winchendon Road died Wednesday in Chambers Memorial Hospital, Anahuac, Texas, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Texas, where he was visiting for the winter.
Mr. Stretton was a deputy tax collector for the towns of Royalston, Templeton and Princeton many years.
He was formerly a plumber and gunsmith, and was once a member of the Royalston Police Department.
He leaves three sisters, Una O. Gardner of North Easton, Lillian R. Thompson of Charlestown and Glayds A. Devlin of Amesbury.
Born in Arlington, he was a son of Thomas E. and Vanetta (Bassett) Stretton, and lived in Royalston many years.
Mr. Stretton was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be in Lawrence Brook Cemetery in the spring.
There are no calling hours.
The family requests flowers by omitted. Memorial contributions may be made instead to a charity of the donor?s choice.
Fletcher Funeral Home, 70 Pleasant St., Winchendon, is directing arrangements.
