      James V. Bassett, EASTON

      James V. Bassett of Easton, formerly of Denton, died Jan. 11 at William Hill Manor in Easton. He was 92. Born in Bayard, Neb., on May 13, 1918, Mr. Bassett was the son of the late Roland Cyrus Bassett and Ruth Bryson Bassett. He served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He became a meteorologist for the Air Weather Service in Washington, D.C., retiring in 1973. In 1974, he and his wife, Louis A. Bassett of Easton, moved to their farm in Concord near Denton where for many years he sold Christmas trees. He was a member of the St. Luke?s United Methodist Church in Denton. In addition to his wife, Mr. Bassett is survived by two sons, James W. Bassett and his wife Linda of Spring Hill, Fla., and Thomas R. Bassett and his wife Marilyn of Columbia, S.C.; two grandchildren, Rebecca Maxwell and Bradley Bassett; and two great-grandchildren, Chapman and Colin. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen and Margaret, and three brothers, Cecil, Sanford and Ralph. A memorial service was private. A committal service will be announced in the future. Elsie Virginia Beulah of Denton passed away Jan. 13 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 87. Born March 17, 1923, in Seaford, Del., she was the only daughter of the late Roland and Effidell Pinckens. Mrs. Beulah attended and graduated from Lockerman High School in Denton. She was very close to her mother and learned how to be a caring and loving wife and mother. She was the center and heart of her family and taught her children those same values. She also had an amazing love for fashion and music. She is survived by her husband, Alonza Beulah, who she had been married to for more than 60 years; three sons, Donald Beulah of Federalsburg, Claude Beulah of Federalsburg, and Carson Beulah of Louisville, Ky.; and her only daughter, Lorraine Wise of Elkridge. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 18 at Williamson Funeral Home, with the Dr. Rev. Vanessa Lee, of Metropolitan Zion United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment took place at Federal Hill Cemetery, in Federalsburg. www.williamsonfuneral.co m. Lee R. Engle PRESTON ? Lee Roy Engle of Preston died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Jan. 14, 2011. He was 89. He was born at Tanyard near Preston on Dec. 10, 1921, the son of the late Richard W. and Effie Secrist Engle. He was a graduate of Preston High School in 1939 and entered the U.S. Army in 1941, serving in Europe with Company Q 99th Division of the 394th Infantry Regiment, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and receiving the European, African and Middle Eastern theatre ribbons. He was discharged in 1945. He was a poultry grower for 52 years for Bay Shore, Con Agra and Allens?s. He was a member of Delmarva Poultry Industry for many years and a life member of the Tuckahoe Steam And Gas Association and was also a member of the Eastern Shore Thresher- man?s Association. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Katherine A. Marshall Engle, whom he married Dec. 4, 1948; a son, Robert E. and his wife Diane of Preston; a daughter, Toni and her husband Donald Cunningham of Greenwood, Del.; five grandchildren, Thomas Engle, Rob Engle, Shelley Hall, Jason Hall and Benjamin Cunningham; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilbur Engle of Preston; and numerous nieces and nephews. Four brothers, Raymond Engle, Howard Engle, Melvin Engle and Harvey Engle, and a sister, Rena Engle, preceded him in death. Graveside services were held Jan. 18 at Junior Order Cemetery in Preston with the Rev. Glen Staehli officiating. The family has requested that donations be made in his memory to The Caroline County Hospice Foundation, P. O. Box 362, Denton, MD 21629.
