      Donald "Gene" Bassett

Donald "Gene" Bassett, a resident of Colville, passed away on Oct. 31 in Colville at the age of 87. Gene was born in Dayton on Jan. 4, 1918, the son of Walter "Jack" and Irene (Glanville) Bassett.

The funeral service was held Nov. 7 at the Reedemer Lutheran Church in Dayton, with Pastor Greg Bye officiating.

Graveside service and vault interment followed at the Dayton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be given to the Calvary Lutheran School, 804 S. 11th St., Sunnyside, WA 98944.

Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Gene grew up in Dayton, where he attended school and was a 1938 graduate of Dayton High School. Gene attended college at the University of Idaho and graduated with a degree in forestry. He married Esther C. Klingenstein on Aug. 31, 1940 in Walla Walla.

In June of 1943, he was then inducted into the Army and served in the Pacific Theatre and Japan during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 15, 1946 and moved with his family to Spokane. While in Spokane, Gene worked for International Harvester.

The family returned to Dayton in 1950 and Gene went to work with his brother-in-law at the local Western Auto Store. Gene eventually purchased and operated the store until it was lost to fire. He then worked for Pool Motors prior to his work with the Walla Walla branch of International Harvester. In 1970 he was transferred to Sunnyside and retired there in 1982. Because of Gene's tireless work ethic, he continued working as an ATM and bank machine repair and refill contractor. He ran the bank machine route until 2000, when his health required that he retire.

Gene and Esther moved to Colville in 2004.

Gene loved to spend time outdoors, hunting, camping and being with family. He followed his children's sports and was an excellent role model. He was a man who led by example. He gifted many bird houses, picture frames and home fixtures through his love of woodworking. His memory will be cherished as a husband who was everything: a wonderful father and attentive grandfather.

Gene is survived by his wife of 65 years, Esther Bassett, Colville; his daughters, Gloria Delp and her husband, Gary, Dayton; Claudia Ohide, Sunnyside; a son, Tom Bassett and his wife, Kathy, Colville; eight grandchildren;: Desiree, Derek, Darrin, Kristen, Gavin, Brandan, Morgan and Dane.
