Laverne Basse
THERMOPOLIS - Laverne Basse, 77, died Tuesday Dec. 26, 2006 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born May 26, 1929 near Crawford, Neb. in Sioux City, the son of August and Margaret (Leeling) Basse. Raised and educated in that area, he entered the U.S. Army in January 1949. He served two and a half years in Okinawa and was honorably discharged Jan. 13, 1952.
He married Dorothy Joan Thornton in November 1952 in Crawford. To this union two children were born in Thermopolis, Steve Allen And Rita Marie. Joan died Sept. 1 1964.
In may of 1952, Vern moved to Thermopolis where he worked for Robinson Electric for 10 years, then became self employed for 12 years. He loved his lifetime work as a refrigerator mechanic (both commercial and domestic) and also enjoyed major appliance repair. He retired after 28 years of employment with Jadeca, his brother Dick's business.
In 1965 he married Georgia Dirks of Crawford and was later divorced. On Sept. 3 1982 he joined in marriage with Sharon Lance Miller. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and also attended Community Federated Church. He was a member of the Lions Club and a life member of VFW #2281.
In addition to his wife he is preceded in death by his parents; sister; Flora Drumwright; nephew and niece, Jerry and Susie Drumwright; stepfather, Floyd Holbert and stepson Mark Dirks.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Sharon of Thermopolis; children, Steve (Mary) Basse of Crawford, Rita (Richard) Fink of Evansville, Curt Miller of Gillette and Marvin (Sue) Dirks of Crawford; Loreli (Herder) Winkelman of Palmer, Alaska; brother Dick (June) Basse of Thermopolis; sister Doris (Bill) Toliver of Crawford; 10 grandchildren, Lindsey Renstrom, Bob Basses, Amber Nicklow, Sean Brisko, Laura, Josh and Jessica Fink, Jennifer, Joseph and Kendra Dirks and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday Jan. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Federated Church with Pastor Steve Frank officiating. Interment will follow at Monument Hill Cemetery with military honors.
A reception to celebrate Vern's life will be held for family and friends at VFW post #2281, 3rd and Broadway, following cemetery services.
Mortimore Funeral Services is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Horn Basin Radiation Oncology Center, 1025 9th St., Ste. B, Cody, 82414, Community Church, 244 N. 6th, 82443 or the Hannah Howe Fund at Pinnacle Bank in Thermopolis.
