Samuel Truss Thompson Jr.
THOMPSON, SAMUEL TRUSS, JR. passed away November 28, 2006. The beloved husband of Betty Bass Thompson for 61 years, he is survived by his two sisters, Louise Woodward and Catherine Grimes; his three children, Robert T. (Tom) Thompson, Lee Thompson and wife Lynn, Jackie Tanner and husband Jerry. Grandchildren include Chris Moore, wife Ashlee, Susanna Moore, Charlotte Thompson, Jeana Lee Fleming, husband Wes, Nicholas Thompson and Alexander Thompson. Sam was overjoyed with his great granddaughter, Bebe Love, daughter of Chris and Ashlee, many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Samuel and Ola Thompson, and a brother Jack Thompson.
Sam was a member of Gardendale United Methodist Church and a native of Gardendale as one of the first pioneer families of Gardendale. He was President and Founder of Oakwood Corporation and a member of the City of Gardendale Zoning Board. Sam enjoyed life to the fullest and was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and a dear friend to many. He also enjoyed his "granddog", Copper.
Sam served in the U.S. Air Force, WW II, and the Korean War as well as a Boy Scout leader for over 20 years. He was an avid Alabama football fan and a member of the Red Elephant Club.
A special thanks to Dr. Tommy Wright, Dr. Roger Coomer and Dr. Ramon Nallamalla of the Huntsville Hospital. Thanks also to Mary Kelly at the Dialysis Center as well as the staff at the Heart Failure Clinic.
The service will be officiated by Dr. Rudy Guess, Dr. Bill Prickett and Pastor Judy Shepherd. Pall bearers are Bryce Boshell, Bill Nobel, Bill Nation, Randy Miles, Steven Black, Eddie Bruce, Charlie Grimes, Stephen Grimes, and Jack Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to Gardendale United Methodist Church or Camp Smile-a-Mile in Sam's memory.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 1, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Ridout's Brown Gardendale Chapel with burial to follow at Oakwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
