      Bassett Dies on Hunting Trip
End Came Suddenly While on Deer Watch in Adirondacks

Joseph Bassett, 67, of the Red Creek-Victory road died suddenly Tuesday forenoon while on a hunting trip in the Salmon Lake section in the town of Webb in Herkimer county.
Mr. Bassett had gone on the deer hunting trip to the Adirondacks with a party of men last Saturday and had expected to spend the week. Tuesday morning the party was staging its second drive and Mr. Bassett was on the watch.
William Lane of Graton, one of the party, passed by at 9:30 a.m. and spoke to him and was surprised he did not answer. Investigation disclosed that he had died while sitting with his back to a tree. Dr. L.M. Campbell, Lewis county coroner pronounced death due to dilation of the heart.
Members of the party included Wayne Coleman, Victory; Gerald Gilbert, Red Creek; Paul Houghtaling, Cato; William Lane and friend of Groton and George Cooper of Martville. Several other men from Victory had planned to join the group later in the week.
Troopers C.A. Hall and David F. Sexton were called from the Lowville station of the New York State Police and arrived at 11 a.m. Following the investigation the body was taken five miles down the river by boat and was then removed to the Virkler funeral home at Lowville, later to be brought to Red Creek to the Recker funeral home.
Mr. Bassett was born in Brockport, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bassett. After his marriage to Miss Mary Derby 42 years ago, they resided in Brockport two years and then moved to Charlotte where they lived seven years. The family then moved to Wolcott where they lived two years, after which Mr. Bassett purchased a farm on Red Creek-Victory road where the family has resided during the past 31 years.
During his early lifetime, Mr. Bassett followed the carpenter trade. Later he turned to farming and continued until his health made it necessary for him to give up farming. He then returned to his carpenter trade which he has followed during the past few years.
Mr. Bassett was a member of St. Thomas’ church in Red Creek.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Darby Bassett; eight children, Mrs. James Collins, New Hartford, N.Y.; Mrs. Francis Winterkorn, Mrs. Andrew Kermis and Mrs. Cyril Streh, all of Rochester; Thomas Bassett, Auburn, and Joseph Bassett Jr. of Red Creek; 19 grandchildren; four brothers, Leo Bassett, Brockport, Emmett Bassett of Ridgetown, Canada; Bernard Bassett, Walcott; Francis Bassett, Rochester; one sister, Mrs. James Moffett, Rochester.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas’ church, Red Creek, with burial in St. Thomas’ cemetery.
