Sherman - Dixie J. Bassett (Pettijohn) was called to glory November 6, 2007 at WNJ Hospital after a three week battle from complications of a hip injury. Graveside services for Dixie were held at 10 a.m. Friday, November 9 at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright, Texas, followed by a memorial service in her memory at 2 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sherman, Texas where she served as an elder. Officiating the services were Reverend Neill Morgan, Reverend Clay Brantley and Reverend Robert Thompson. She was born March 20, 1939, in Whitewright, Texas, daughter of Floyd and Anna Jo (Pennington) Bassett. She graduated from Whitewright High School, and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from North Texas State University. Later, she earned a master's degree from East Texas State University. She taught school for 31 years in the Sherman Independent School District (Fairview Elementary and Dillingham Jr. High).
She was involved in many community service organizations, including the following: Member of Covenant Presbyterian Church; A.A.U.W.; Retired Teachers Association; Auxiliary Member of WNJ and Community Hospitals; Whitewright Historial Society; Scleroderma support group; RSVP of Grayson Co.; Volunteer at Home Hospice of Grayson Co.; Orphan Train Riders Association; and Texas State Teachers Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Ann Jo (Pennington) Bassett of Whitewright, Texas. She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Fulton and husband Steve Fulton of Tom Bean; Denise Marcum and husband Russell Marcum of Pottsboro. brother Jim Bassett and wife Alice Ann of George West, Texas; and a sister Beverly Herrera and husband Charlie of Columbus, Ohio. She was blessed with five grandchildren, Brittany and Leslie Fulton of Tom Bean and Jake, Hailee, and Hannah Marcum of Pottsboro.
The family received visitors on Thursday, November 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Earnheart Funeral Home in Whitewright, Texas. Memorials may be made to Home Hospice of Grayson County, 505 West Center, Sherman, Texas 75090. Arrangements were with Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow's Earnheart Funeral Home, Whitewright, Texas.
