Lonnie Jackson (L.J.) Bassett, Jr., 78, of 4866 Ebb Hall Road, Dublin, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2005 at his home. Born March 26, 1926 in Pulaski, he was the son of the late Lonnie Jackson Bassett, Sr. and Helen Shrader Bassett. One sistr, Ora Lee Marshall and one brother, Charles Edward Bassett also preceded him in death. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the United States Navy. He was a member of Highland Community Church, The New River Shrine Club, a mason with the Pythagoras Lodge #239 Pulaski, Va., and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was retired from the C&P Telephone Company with 35 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Martha Peterson Bassett of Dublin; sons, Jon Ashley Bassett of Dublin, and Joseph Mitchell and Cathey Bassett of Blacksburg; sister, Aldine Dickerson Morris of Pulaski; nephew, E.R. Dickerson of Pulaski; sisters-in-law, Ann Crisman and husband, James, of Radford, and Louise Osborne and husband, Warner, of Dublin; brother-in-law Bill Peterson and wife, Judy King Peterson, of Dublin; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Highland Community Church, Dublin with Pastor Michael Blouse officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Highland Community Church, with a Masonic Memorial Service prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow at the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin Wednesday morning 11 a.m. where the V.F.W. Post #1184 will conduct full military honors. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling arrangements.
