      Drowned in Montreal Harbor

This morning Jeremiah Bassett of this city, received a dispatch from Montreal stating that his son, Jeremiah Jr., had been drowned in the harbor of Montreal while out in a boat.
The drowned man was born in this city, and had always lived here until this spring, when he went with his brother to work in Montreal.
He was a member of the Portland Longshoremen?s Benevolent society, and a special meeting of that organization will be held this evening. He would have been 22 years old next month, and leaves three brothers.
The brother in Montreal will probably arrive home with the body some time today or tomorrow.

Circumstances of the Death of Jeremiah Bassett

The death of Jeremiah Bassett by drowning at Montreal came about in a peculiar way. While engaged at work on the Allan liner Numidian, he started up the gangway on a sling of flour. By the breaking of a guy he was thrown against the side of the ship, and thence fell into the river. Bassett was 25 years old, and unmarried. He was a great favorite with his associates.
