James V. Bassett, 83, of Oceanside, CA, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013.
Jim was born to the late Frank and Ethel Bassett on January 5, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA. He married Joan Johnson on May 19, 1951.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joan Bassett and his four children, Kenneth Bassett, Alice Hage, Beth Foster and Ron Bassett. He is also survived by six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his two sisters, Pauline Obenauf and Marjorie McNair. He was preceded in death by his brother Donald Bassett.
Jim served in the United States Marine Corps for 22 years. Early in his career, Jim and his family were stationed at Subic Bay in the Philippines. This to him was the highlight of his Marine Corps service. He ended his career after serving his final tour in Vietnam where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart.
Later, Jim was active in the Subic Bay Marines for 20 years, most of the time serving as Secretary. "The mission of the Subic Bay Marines is to perpetuate memories of our duty in the Philippines and to foster camaraderie among Subic Bay Marines at an annual reunion. The Subic Bay Marines serve as a role model for all Marines, past, present and future. We will honor our commitment to this mission until there is no longer a Subic Bay Marine standing."
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Jim became a real estate appraiser. He then went on to volunteer for the California Highway Patrol for 12 years and received the Volunteer of the Year award in 1998. Afterward, he continued to volunteer for the Escondido Police Department.
Jim had a passion for genealogy. His research revealed ties to relatives in England, Australia, and the United States dating back to the year 870.
Jim was an avid family man who never missed an opportunity to attend all events in his children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's lives. Jim loved to give his wife flowers; they were married for 62 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Semper Fi Fund.
