LETTER From Hannah Bassett and Mary A Bassett to
Hester Lanphierd July 9, 1871 Lapeer, Michigan
Dear Children we received your kind letter and was glad to hear
you were enjoying so good a state of health. This finds us as well as
usual, I think your father's health is more than commonly good for a
person of his years. My own is better than it was last summer or fall, I
have taken to drinking as much cold water as my stumach will bear, when I
first get up in the morning, and thus drink two or three times before
breakfast, and often through the day, and find this course beneficial.
Every since this sore mouth has afflicted me, there has been a peculiar
bad taste in my mouth, and water seemed to bring it out more than any
thing else I took into it, but I find it does me the most good of things I
have tried. Your father has just got fairly into his haying, and will soon
be into his harvest, crops look good in this vicinity except corn, that is
amll in some fields, but your father's is beautiful. It has been quite
frosty here this summer, although there does not seem to be much damage
done to the crops. We had a few weeks of very dry weather in the fore-part
of the season which did some damage, at least apparently to grass and late
spring crops, - but have had showers of late that have greatly revived
things generally.
But the dryest thing in this place it seems to me is the
religeious feeling of the people, that seems not only dry and parched, but
cold and frozen; and a state of feeling of this sort, with moisture, and
warmth lacking, is dreary indeed, and I feel at times almost to faint.
But Hester dar, it done my soul good to hear say you have shiped
on board of Old Ship Zion, and I feel sure you will enjoy the society of
the crew, led by such a glorious leader as the Captin of our Salvation.
You have chosen the good part which none can take from you, and if your
health is poor at times, Jesus, the great Physician can cure your bodily
ailments, as well as the malady of the Soul. Your life and all is safe in
his keeping. I am glad to hear you say you are intending to be baptized as
soon as possible. Do by all means, and why not at the Quarterly-meeting of
which you spoke, and don't be offended if I advise you to be immersed, for
that is an end to disputing, for all admit that to be baptism, but a great
many will not allow Sprinkling to be. I will write you that Hymn you spoke
of, and regret that I had not sooner have done it. I trust the Lord will
be present at your meeting, to bless, and sanctify your precious souls.
How I would like to be to your meeting, and help to sing the song of Zion
with you and Sister Lanphierd, and how enjoy a prayer meeting with you, I
don't suppose it will be possible, but if our meetings on earth are so
blest how glorious will be the meetings in Heaven.
Let us strive for our Saviour's presence ehre, and witness of our
acceptance, by reading the Scripture, and praying for grace, and wisdom
from on high, to guide us all our way. Remeber me to Sister L., and pray
for me, and be assured of my prayers and love.

Dear Aunt Hester, I will not write much as Mother has told you all the
news. I was glad to hear from you and still more to hear that you have
joined the faith that some others of my best friends have loved so long. I
wish you was here today but you cannot be now but I hope it won't be so
long before we shall al meet again. I will send ? that money this time so
good by my love to all and I ???? from Mary A Bassett to Aunt Hester
Lanphierd.
