Lois Pauley Bass

Lois Pauley Bass, fondly known as Gamma to many people, departed this life on January 6, 2018. She was 92 years old. Born in Middletown, New York, on October 4, 1925, Lois moved to Knoxville in 1946 to attend St. Mary?s School of Nursing. Soon afterwards, she met her future husband, Roy Bass, on a blind date and they were married two years later. Lois was a kind, gracious and strong woman, known as a wonderful conversationalist with a quick wit. She enjoyed a 30-year career at the University of Tennessee, starting as head cashier at UT Bookstore, then managing the Student Activities Business Office for more than 20 years. Multiple generations of students found their way to Lois?s office on the third floor of the Student Center. Never judgmental, Lois saw right past the trappings of youth. She was interested in people. She wanted to hear their stories, share a good laugh, and if asked, offer a bit of practical advice. Lois received the University?s UnSung Hero award in 1989. After retiring from UT, she loved to travel with her daughter, Cindy, and her family. Lois lived independently until age 90, then moved to Manor House, an assisted living facility where she enjoyed the support of community, a caring staff and regular exercise. Throughout her life, Lois believed that challenges should be met with resilience. ?It?s all part of living,? she said of setbacks, ?you adjust and keep going.? Lois was great company and always ready to go anywhere at a moment?s notice, right up until a few days before her passing. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Pauley and Frances Mapes; brother Tom Pauley; husband, Roy H. Bass, Jr.; and son-in-law, Roy Emery III. She is survived by her children, Richard Bass (Gina), Cindy Emery, and Peggy Bass Bridges (Joey); grandchildren, Lea Emery Wampler (Jeremy), Brittany Bass and Rebecca Hanson Bass; great-grandchildren, Emery and Zeke Wampler; and sister-in-law, Judy Bass Hollow (Rick). Lois requested a private funeral service.
