Napoleon Bessette Dies in Hospital
Easthampton, Sept. 11 – Napoleon Bessette, 78, of 72 Ferry St. died this afternoon at the Cooley-Dickinson Hospital after a short illness.
He was born April 3, 1877, in St. Anne de Stu Kely, Canada, son of Henry and Agnes (Blanchard) Bessette. He came to Easthampton in 1902 and lived here until 1912, when he moved to Canada. He returned here 10 years later with his family.
He married the former Rosanna Peloquin on July 29, 1907, in Notre Dame Church. She died Feb. 14, 1949.
He was employed by Hampshire County as a caretaker at the M. Tom State Reservation until his retirement at the age of 70. He was a member of the League of Sacred Heart of Notre Dame Church.
He leaves five daughters, Mrs. Victor Tatro, Mrs. William Grover, Mrs. Raymond Boulanger, Mrs. Oliver Charette, all of Easthampton, and Mrs. Homer LaBonte of Holyoke; two sons, Rene and Roland, both of this town; six sisters,, Mrs. Vitaline Babin of Portsmouth,Va., Mrs. Rosanna Racicot and Mrs. B Prairie, both of Montreal, Can., Mrs. Anna Royez and Mrs. Emma Royez, both of Waterloo, Can. And Mrs. Angelina Bachand of St. Anne de Stu Kely; four brothers, Arthur and Edward, both of Waterloo, Antoine of Granby, Conn., and Henry of St. Anne de Stu Kely; 15 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held at the Boucher funeral home Wednesday at 8:30, followed by a solemn requiem high mass in Notre Dame Church at 9. Burial will be in St. Brigid’s Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 10 and Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10.

Bessette Funeral
Easthampton, Sept. 14 – Funeral of Napoleon Bessette of Parsons St. was held this morning at the Boucher funeral home, followed by a solemn high mass of requiem in Notre Dame Church. Rev. Sylvio Thomas of Ludlow was celebrant; Rev. Albert Breton, assistant pastor was deacon. Rev. Leon Sauvageau, pastor, was seated within the sanctuary.
Supt. John R. Knox, of the Mt. Tom State Reservation represented the reservation commission, by whom Mr. Bessette was employed for a number of years.
Bearers were Albert Lepine, Francis Laprade, Harry Laflamme Jr., Stanislas Laprade, Eugene Boulanger and Henry Seymour. Burial was in St. Brigad’s Cemetery with Fr. Breton officiating.
