Jack Dowey
Jack Dowey was reunited with his wife, Louise (Lehmier), on June 11, 2006.
He was raised in Bakerton, Pa., until he joined the Navy as a gunner on the U.S.S. Stokes from 1942 to 1946. Jack then came to Akron, working as a plant guard at Mohawk Rubber Co. for 33 years. He was a very generous man, working on many committees and sponsoring others. Jack was a member of the Masons, D.A.V., VFW, American Legion, Eagles Club, F.O.P., B.S.C. Union, and the CCC. He sponsored the Athletic Club in his hometown of Bakerton, and was honored by them with Jack Dowey Day every Fourth of July. His greatest accomplishment was marrying Louise and raising nine children. Jack's greatest joy was having his family and friends around him camping, cooking out, big dinners, and taking lots of pictures.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Louise; daughter, Peggy; son, Cliff; parents, Ted and Lillian Dowey. Jack is survived by his children and their spouses, Jackie (Bob) Smith, Lois (Mike) Boston, Susan Hendershot, Michael Dowey, Laura Dowey, twins Teddi R. and Jack R. Dowey, Don (Kristal) Dowey; brother, Bill Dowey; sister, Phyllis Dilkas; 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many special friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to Renee Oplinger for her love and devotion in caring for Dad.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., followed by a dinner at the VFW Club on Krumroy Road. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 p.m. Thursday until the service begins. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
