Thomas Leon Bass
Lakeland (Florida) Ledger, December 21
Thomas Leon Bass died Saturday morning at 1 oâ??clock at the family residence, 824 South Mississippi Avenue. He had been in poor health for a number of years, but since November 29 had been in a critical condition.
Funeral services will be held this morning at 10 oâ??clock from Smith and Dukes Funeral Home and the body, accompanied by Mrs. Bass, will be sent at 11:40 to Latta, South Carolina, where interment will be made in the Bass cemetery. The services here will be conducted by the Reverend C.A. Raymond, pastor of the First Presbyterian church.
Besides his wife, Mr. Bass is survived by two sons, Earl Bass, Hendersonville, North Carolina, and T.L. Bass, Jr., Lakeland; four daughters, Mrs. G.D. Williams, River Junction; Mrs. J.A. Vaughn, Jacksonville; Miss Essie Bass and Miss Marian Bass, this city. Bob Covington is a cousin. Another relative, H.H. Bass of Latta, will arrive here this morning.
Mr. Bass, who was 60 years of age, came to Lakeland about ten years ago from Chester, South Carolina, where he was a prominent cotton planter, prior to that time having been engaged in the mercantile business in Dillon, South Carolina. On his arrival here he purchased the Jones grove, south of the city, which he later sold to J.T. Horney.
Mr. Bass made many friends here and was greatly admired by all with whom he came in contact. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.
Mrs. Bass, formerly Miss Carrie McQueen of Morven, North Carolina, has many friends in South Carolina, having taught school in the state for several years prior to her marriage.
