Ernest Bass, Founder of Broward Meat Co.
Ernest Guyton Bass Sr. started out with little. So after he founded one of the first meat-processing plants in Broward County, he decided to give something back. Mr. Bass gave scholarships to at least 20 Dillard High School students while he did business in South Florida. Mr. Bass died Monday at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale after a prolonged illness. He was 86. His family moved from Cadwell, Georgia, to Miami when Mr. Bass was 11 years old. As a young man, he became manager of Table Supply grocery store in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a store chain that would later become Winn-Dixie. Mr. Bass saved up enough money to found the Broward Meat Company, a Fort Lauderdale meat-processing plant that supplied food to the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Bass also founded Bass Brothers Market in Fort Lauderdale, which he eventually sold. He built the first grocery store in the Upper Keys, the Marathon Cash and Carry. At the time, it was the only grocery store between Homestead and Key West. "He was just always generous," said Mr. Bass' son, Guy Bass. "He started with very little himself. When he did well, he gave back to the community." Mr. Bass is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret Louise; his sons, Guy and Fred Bass; his daughters-in-law, Jeanne and Pamela; his sister, Ernestine Halliday; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fairchild Funeral Home, 299 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
