Notes from Robert Bassett:
"Born May 5th, 1875 at 10 a.m. Self taught musician, concertina and piano.
Good mimic, Entertaining.
Joined the Royal Navy. Believed to have contracted a bigamous marriage. As a sailor,
he was away from home a great deal. Deserted his own family about 1910 and went to
America. A contributing factor to his hasty disappearance could have been that
he was something of an alcoholic. At first in America, he contacted his
brothers but later he may have gone to Australia or New Zealand. His life from
then on was unknown. Arthur Hensley Bassett says he may have disappeared in
the San Francisco earthquake. His wife Bessie was loved by the rest of the
family. After her husband had disappeared she took in lodgers to keep herself
and two children. Bessie had a hard struggle with two boys on such limited
resources and she was forced to make Leslie leave school and start working for
5?? a week at the age of fourteen. He had won first place in the Devonshire
County Scholarship to go on to Grammar School but due to financial straits he
was unable to take this up.
