  Notes	There is currently no proof that Isaac belongs here. The following, Isaac, Willian N., Maud E., George W. and Adolphus, are really Hammonds. New Albany Daily Ledger, 18 Aug 1857 (Indiana) The Clinton County Republican says that Mr. Sylvanus Bassett, of that county, was killed by the careless handling of fire-arms. The Republican thus reports the case: He had just asked his brother if a gun he held in his hands was loaded, to which the latter replied that he did not know, and turned to extract a sunken ball from a tree. Immediately afterwards he heard the report, turning, saw his brother struggling in death, the ball having entered the roof of his mouth and lodging in the back part of his head. It is supposed that he was blowing into the muzzle, when the gun, from some cause, was discharged. Sylvenis Bassett, most likely the son of Isaac Bassett, married Margaret Hammond, daughter of Jesse and Anna (Reed) Hammond, on 12 Jun 1854 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana (M.R.5 page 467). He shows as Isaac in the 1860 census of Newton County, Indiana where he is listed with children of Margaret from her first marriage.
